Raj Kumar, 91̽ (JGU), signed two key agreements creating new opportunities for law students in India and the United States to pursue a global education.

As per the MoU signed between the universities, students of JGLS will have opportunities to pursue an LLM degree at Seattle University School of Law while they finish their final year at JGLS with concentrations in American Legal Studies or in Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.

As part of the academic credit system, the programme also offers opportunities to work with Seattle-based employers, including multi-national corporations (including Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing), international tribunals, and government agencies. Students from India will have the opportunity to study with world-class professors and gain real work experience to become globally trained lawyers.

Reciprocally, students at Seattle University School of Law will have the opportunity to participate in an India Immersion Programme in March 2023, which includes lectures, workshops, study tours to legal and other public institutions, and cultural visits. Institutional leaders from Seattle University School of Law and JGU welcomed the partnership as an advancement towards building a legal community with global imaginations and spirit.

Emphasizing the need for garnering global imagination in an increasingly integrated world, Professor Anthony E. Varona, Dean, Seattle University School of Law, observed, “As more legal work transcends national borders, lawyers with significant global knowledge and experience will be in high demand. Students of both JGU and Seattle University School of Law will benefit from these programmes, which in turn will provide meaningful ways to learn about foreign legal systems, norms, and traditions.”

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU and Founding Dean of JGLS, remarked that, “This partnership will help students build a strong foundation in academic fundamentals and at the same time provide the required skills and knowledge necessary to compete in a global marketplace. I am certain that partnerships like this one will help build young professionals who are ready to take up global challenges. JGU has always been driven by global ambitions, aiming to partake in India’s progress to the centre-stage of global happenings. I am delighted that we have taken yet another step in that direction”&Բ;

Seattle University School of Law has strong connections to India and the study of its legal system. Associate Professor of Law Sital Kalantry, whose scholarship focuses on India, founded the India Center for Law and Justice, which works with law schools in India to promote legal education and mentor emerging law scholars. It also promotes engagement with India among the students at Seattle University School of Law. In her additional role as Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programmes, she has been working to develop legal education programmes specifically for international students. Prof. Kalantry has been associated with JGU since its inception in 2009.

Drawing on her association with JGU for more than a decade, Professor Sital Kalantry, Faculty Director, India Centre for Law and Justice, Seattle University School of Law observed that “JGU is now the number one private university in India, and our law school is thrilled to work with such an exceptional institution. We look forward to providing an exciting learning experience to the students from India in one of the most exciting and innovative cities in the world, significantly adding to their skills and positively shaping their law careers.”

On this special occasion, Professor (Dr.) Sreejith S.G., Executive Dean, JGLS, reiterated the global ambitions of JGU and observed, “For a law school like JGLS, which is deeply committed to impart global legal education, international collaborations are part of its evolution and expansion. Through international collaborations, the school creates spaces of ‘interculturality’ for providing global experience to its students.”&Բ;

The beneficiary of the collaborations would be Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), which has been ranked 70th globally and 1st in India by the QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2022. Seattle University is the largest independent university in the Pacific Northwest, and its legal writing programme ranks #6 in the U.S. News and World Report and clinical programme in the top 30.

Singhvi Establishes Rs. 2 Crore Endowment at 91̽ /blog/2022/09/21/dr-abhishek-m-singhvi-establishes-rs-2-crore-endowment-at-o-p-jindal-global-university/ Wed, 21 Sep 2022 07:05:53 +0000 /blog/?p=2930 Continue Reading]]> Eminent jurist and Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi has established the Singhvi Endowment as a generous act of philanthropy at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of 91̽ (JGU).

Dr. Singhvi has signed an Endowment Agreement with 91̽ (JGU) for the establishment of the پԲ󱹾&Բ;ԻǷɳԳ” at Jindal Global Law School to the tune of Rs. 2 crores. The students of JGLS would be the primary beneficiaries of this extraordinarily generous philanthropic initiative. This initiative, inter alia, pays homage to the memory of Dr. L.M. Singhvi, the eminent diplomat, parliamentarian, jurist and author.

The Singhvi Endowment will have five major components to it:

• Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi Outstanding Youth Scholarship

The Excellence Scholarship aims to recognize the outstanding merit of entrants to Jindal Global Law School and to encourage and support them in their continuing studies at JGLS to become outstanding professionals of law. This will be awarded on an annual basis to the topper of the LSAT-India Entrance Exam for admission to JGLS. Bestowal of this scholarship would be a recognition of the merit and potential of young law students as they begin their legal studies.

• Mrs. Anita Singhvi Outstanding Youth Scholarship

The aim of “Mrs. Anita Singhvi Outstanding Youth Scholarship” is to recognize the outstanding merit of young law students who are admitted to JGLS and to encourage and support them in their continuing studies to become outstanding professionals of law. This Excellence Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to the topper of the LSAT-India Entrance Exam for admission to JGLS. Bestowal of this scholarship would be a recognition of the merit and potential of young law students.

• Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi Academic Award and Gold Medal for Outstanding Academic Performance in Administrative Law

This is an award and medal that is instituted to inspire and celebrate the student who is the topper in the course on “Administrative Law”. Bestowal of this award would be a recognition of their efforts, endeavors, and success in a branch of law that is highly relevant in the governance of a self-constituting, democratic and reorganizing global society based on the principles of the rule of law.

• Dr. L.M. Singhvi Annual Global Conference on International Law and International Relations

The conference aims to draw inspiration from the early efforts of Dr. L.M. Singhvi who functioned within the intersecting spaces of international law and international relations and to draw inspiration from his work in the global society. The conference’s predominant focus would be on the intersections of international law and relations—the ideas and practices therein—on areas such as diplomacy, inter-state relations, strategies, dispute settlement, economic and cultural relations, and law & policy-making.

• Dr. L.M. Singhvi Memorial Annual Lecture Series

The Lecture Series aims to focus on topics close to Dr. L.M. Singhvi’s heart, which include legislative process, international relations, diplomacy, international law, Indian culture, and global togetherness. The larger philosophy of the Lecture Series is to share the perspectives and ideas of Dr. L.M. Singhvi to the younger generation through the topics, which inspired his thoughts and action.

There are five major objectives of the establishment of the Singhvi Endowment at JGU:

First, to recognise the role of philanthropy in higher education and legal education with a view to empowering young people to fulfill their dreams and aspirations to pursue university education. It provides opportunities for creating access to world-class legal education in India for people who may not be able to afford it, especially at a premier institution.

Second, to recognise the role of the senior members and leaders of the legal profession to participate in the efforts to promote excellence in legal education. This makes such leaders and outstanding members of the legal profession to be able to engage with all stakeholders directly and have a larger impact in the efforts to raise the quality of legal education and legal profession.

Third, to empower law schools and universities to work towards building collaborations and partnerships with the senior members of the legal profession to serve as mentors for students and younger members of the bar. This will ensure that accomplished lawyers are able to substantially participate in the efforts to build the future of legal profession.

Fourth, to recognise the contribution of leaders in the legal profession and other professions by instituting endowments with a view to celebrating their achievements for perpetuity through annual conferences and memorial lecture series. This will also serve as a legacy for the future by inspiring generations of students to follow the path laid down by eminent persons.

Fifth, to support the active engagement of the outstanding members and leaders of the legal profession in the development of law schools and universities with a view to shaping their curriculum, teaching pedagogy, research ecosystem, experiential learning, advocacy skills, international collaborations and clinical legal education. The philanthropic contribution of the successful members of the legal profession will help in benchmarking the quality and standards of Indian legal education with the best in the world.

Commenting on this special occasion, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, 91̽ (JGU) & Founding Dean, Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) said, “This is a historic occasion for JGU and JGLS to have become the recipient of the distinguished endowment by Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi. While it is stark evidence of Dr. Singhvi’s outstanding commitment and dedication to higher education and legal education, his choice of JGU as the institution for realizing his commitment is a huge recognition for us. The Singhvi Endowment will be the first and pioneering endowment established in JGU outside the philanthropic initiative of our founding Chancellor and benefactor, Mr. Naveen Jindal who endowed the entire university. I am truly overwhelmed by this generous gesture of Dr. Singhvi and the Singhvi family. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of JGU, I thank Dr. Singhvi and his family for their generosity and commitment to philanthropy. This Endowment has been established at JGU for perpetuity and several initiatives will be part of the endowment benefitting the faculty and students of JGU and JGLS.”&Բ;

Announcing the Singhvi Endowment, Dr. Abhishek M. Singhvi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India & Member of Parliament, observed, “I am most excited to announce the establishment of the Singhvi Endowment at Jindal Global Law School of 91̽. JGU and JGLS have been at the forefront of promoting excellence in legal and higher education in India. The fact that JGU and JGLS have been recognised as India’s first ranked private university and India’s first ranked law school respectively and indeed, consistently for three years in a row by the QS World University Rankings demonstrates the stellar national and international reputation of this national ‘institution of eminence’. Our goal in establishing the Singhvi Endowment is to give it back to the society from where I have immensely benefitted. The vision of the Singhvi Endowment is to provide access to world-class education for young people who cannot afford and to empower India’s leading universities to promote excellence.”

Reflecting on the news relating to the Singhvi Endowment, Professor Peter H. Schuck, Simeon E. Baldwin Professor of Law Emeritus, Yale Law School, USA & Chair, International Board of Advisors, JGU observed, “The establishment of a new and extraordinarily generous endowment at JGU by the noted philanthropist and jurist, Dr. Abhishek Singhvi represents a firm commitment to this remarkable institution’s continued flourishing and expansion into new areas of study, research, innovation, and community service. It is a magnificent tribute to the vision of JGU’s founding leadership, which will enable it to strengthen its leading roles in all of these areas, while developing new ones. This endowment will further entrench JGU’s leading role not only in India but throughout the developing world.”

Professor (Dr.) Jayanth K. Krishnan, Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law, Indiana University, USA & Co-Chair, International Board of Advisors, JGU observed, “This incredibly generous gift by Dr. Singhvi is a significant moment in the history of 91̽. Dr. Singhvi’s extraordinary contribution here to promote the rule of law by helping to strengthen legal education is pivotal for all of us who care about providing access to the best research and teaching opportunities to the next generation of law students and future lawyers in India. As a long-time, loyal supporter of JGU, I am personally inspired and extremely moved by what Dr. Singhvi has done here for this wonderful institution.”

Professor (Dr.) Sreejith S.G., Executive Dean, Jindal Global Law School observed that, “A university becoming the site of philanthropic initiatives is a heartening sight, as it is tantamount to making a contribution to the making of the future. While philanthropy in the form of endowments supports the university, it also vests upon the university the responsibility to fulfill expectations of the highest order. I am certain, and determined, that Jindal Global Law School will uphold the values of this endowment and honour its objectives. We deeply appreciate the generous act of philanthropy of Dr. Singhvi in establishing the Singhvi Endowment, which I am sure will inspire other leaders in the legal profession.”&Բ;

Jindal Global Law School’s Faculty Research in Scopus-Indexed Publications Exceed all NLUs /blog/2022/02/09/jindal-global-law-schools-faculty-research-in-scopus-indexed-publications-exceed-all-nlus/ Wed, 09 Feb 2022 05:42:55 +0000 /blog/?p=2592 Continue Reading]]> Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of 91̽ (JGU)has reached the remarkable landmark milestone of300+ academic research publications by its faculty members of which 280+ are indexed in SCOPUS during 2020-2021. Scopus is the largest database of peer-reviewed literature in the world. The record 280 faculty publications comes in the middle of the pandemic, where the stress on all individuals was enormous. Academicians in JGLS, and other educational institutions, have been balancing teaching and research commitments since March 2020. The persistent efforts of Jindal’s law faculty isa testamentto the commitment and dedication of India’s number one ranked law school towards cutting-edge research and scholarship.

It is important to put these numbers in perspective. There are 23 National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. The first Indian NLU on this list is 35 years old and the top four/five NLUs were established in the 1980s and the 1990s. An analysis of the SCOPUS database managed by Elsevier publishing house reveals that, for the same period, Jindal Global Law School’s record 280 Scopus-indexed publications are twice the number of Scopus-indexed publications listed by all the 23 NLUs combined. On average, one NLU can be credited with 6 SCOPUS publications in 2020-21.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, 91̽ & Founding Dean, JGLS, extending his compliments to all faculty members who contributed to this significant accomplishment, stated, “This is an extraordinary feat by the Jindal Global Law School. 280+ articles in reputed journals and edited books is an outstanding achievement for a young law school that is just 12 years old. Of course, a large body of research work is published in reputed journals that may not be indexed in SCOPUS. This is a remarkable sign of the strength and resilience of the law faculty of JGU and legal scholars and practitioners in general. I feel this is an important day in Indian legal research and education where the overall Indian knowledge ecosystem stands to benefits greatly from this achievement. I congratulate the faculty members of JGLS and the Office of the Research Dean of JGLS for their committed, continuing, and commendable efforts”.&Բ;

Professor (Dr.) Sreejith S.G., Executive Dean, JGLS stated that, “Faculty members of JGLS, who are also outstanding scholars in their respective fields, turned the conditions created by the COVID-19 Pandemic into ‘perspectives’ to study the state of play and the new normal. Many of the publications responded to the questions the world had on the sustenance during the Pandemic and rediscovering the post-Pandemic world. Their research hence has the spirit of reimagination, recovery and redemption and has the story of courage, confidence, and capacity”.&Բ;

This achievement is the result of consciously evolved policies and practices that have systematically prioritized faculty research, created an enabling environment for research and carefully guarded research space and time of JGLS faculty members. JGLS has also set up a dedicated Research Deans’ Office under the leadership of Prof. Dipika Jain, Vice Dean (Research) and Prof. Shivprasad Swaminathan (Associate Dean, Research) and Albeena Shakil (Associate Dean, Research), which has organized several faculty research seminars and faculty research colloquia for discussing the working papers of faculty members, and workshops on the process of publishing throughout this difficult pandemic period. They consulted over 200 faculty members to create comprehensive policies on research and put in place robust processes and enduring institutional structures for propelling research at JGLS. The Office created a framework of mentoring faculty members in their early-career and enabled them to publish in high impact journals. The importance of SCOPUS publications in the context of a university’s benchmarking to international standards cannot be overstated.

Professor Dipika Jain, Vice Dean (Research), JGLS explained the School’s efforts during the period. “As a research centric University, we identified research initiatives which brought together scholars presently at different points of their intellectual journey into the collegial enterprise of supporting each other’s research. The approach of the School towards research has been ‘publish and flourish’. This motto became a hope during the murkier phase of the Pandemic. This hope drove us to build an ecosystem of collaborative knowledge creation, as we sensed that world which would recover from the Pandemic would need ideas for restoration. Mindful of this, we motivated our colleagues to unfold their thoughts and enabled the younger ones by collaborating and deliberating on the art and joy of critical reading, thinking, and writing”.&Բ;

Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar, JGU observed, “With this stellar achievement of JGLS, all schools of JGU will encourage its faculty members to redouble their efforts towards further sustaining a vibrant culture of research that has been fostered over the last decade or so at JGLS — a culture in which scholars thrive and along with it. JGLS continues to build on its position as a premier institution for research not just in India, but globally. I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to the faculty members of JGLS and wish them the very best in scaling even greater heights in the time to come.”

Sorabjee Endowment Award and Scholarship has been established owing to a generous endowment instituted by Senior Advocate Mr. Satvik Varma in his personal capacity and will be offered for 20 years.While making the endowment Mr. Varma shared “Mr. Sorabjee’s passing was a huge personal loss. Over the years, I had developed a very close personal relationship with him, which afforded an insight into the man as a lawyer and also his personal side. He was generous, affectionate, caring, compassionate and always ready to extend a helping hand. His values and passion have deeply inspired and influenced me. And his loss has left the legal community in India and abroad with a void. We felt the best way to continue his deep commitment to Human Rights was by instituting an extended Scholarship and Award in his memory.”

Raj Kumar observed, “The purpose of the scholarship is to promote academic excellence, research, integrity and diversity by recognizing the outdstanding academic achievement of a student in course on human rights. We are grateful to Mr. Satvik Varma for partnering with 91̽ for instituting this award in the name of Mr. Soli. J. Sorabjee. Mr. Satvik Varma, himself a distinguished graduate of Harvard Law School and also qualified to practice internationally, recognises the importance of quality legal education that JGLS provides its students. As someone vested in the legal system, Mr. Varma feels it his duty to help the future generation of lawyers and consequently this Scholarship and Award bridges Mr. Varma’s commitment towards nurturing law students and carrying forward the name and legacy of one of India’s leading legal luminaries. We thank him for this generous act.”

Professor Kumar observed, “Mr. Sorabjee, his daughter, Ms. Zia Mody and his wife, Ms. Zena Sorabjee have been great champions of Jindal Global Law School and 91̽ since its inception. The family shared the message they wish to convey to the students at JGLS: Tread Ye the Path of Justice and Equity in All Things; a quote from the á--岹, the central book of the Baháʼí Faith which deeply signifies the Baháʼí perspectives of justice.

While responding to this award, Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar, JGU said, “A&Բ;a research intensive university, and as an outcome of the graduate attributes at the O.P.Jindal Global University we expect our students to develop the capacity to take up social and civic responsibilities relating to the environment and the society and thus foster a deep understanding of, and respect, for, diversity and pluralism. The course on Human Rights Theory and Practice will help our students develop and deepen the understanding on human rights issues, and the Soli Sorabjee award to an outstanding student will be an enabler to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights, in consonance with ideals and commitment of Mr. Soli Sorabjee”.&Բ;

Students can now take LSAT–India in March and secure their future by April at Jindal Global Law School, India’s number one ranked Law School by QS

JGLS to admit up to 75 percent of its intake through LSAT March Administration

LSAT–India Examination on 25th March. The Application closes on 14th March.

Today marks an extraordinary moment in the administration of legal education entrance process in India as Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of 91̽ (JGU) announced that for the very first time LSAT—India will now be conducted twice in 2021 in order to give students multiple opportunities to pursue their aspirations of their future in legal education.

Law School Admission Council (LSAC) USA, which leads the entrance examination process for legal education worldwide, has taken this bold and innovative step to increase the frequency of the examination for Indian law schools. LSAT–India will now be available to students first on 25th March 2021 and second one on 14th June 2021. This would enable students with the flexibility to have multiple opportunities to take the examination based on their convenience. The dates have been thoughtfully planned to have one examination placed prior to the 12th standard CBSE Board Examinations and the other post the completion of the same. This will be very helpful provide additional relief to every student taking the 12th Board Examinations this year and aspiring to study law, especially in the context of the additional duress created by the ongoing pandemic.

Jindal Global Law School, ranked as India’s Number One Law School and 76th in the World by the recent QS World University Rankings 2021 by Subject (Law), and the only Indian Law school to be ranked in the same, feels a sense of commitment to lead such pathways for the youth of India. In this very endeavour, JGLS continues to partner and collaborate with LSAC to advance this initiative, and give the students aspiring to study in JGLS a unique opportunity to secure their future at JGLS very early in the year by the virtue of being able to take the examination March.

On this occasion, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of 91̽ (JGU) said, “This is a landmark moment for students pursuing their aspirations in legal education. Jindal Global Law School is committed to providing the students of India a world-class experience not only within the spectrum of our legal education but also by ensuring global standards of best practices in the governance of the admission process. Keeping in mind the sensitivity of these times we live in, it is important to empathize with the additional stress students face today regarding their future, only further exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. Therefore, this initiative comes as a great opportunity for students to not only have the flexibility and convenience of multiple attempts at the law entrance examination, but more importantly a chance to secure their future at Jindal Global Law School very early in the year by completing the examination in March itself. The placement of this examination schedule in March is such that it will take place when other entrance examinations are not commonly scheduled, and prior to the Board examinations, and therefore, will allow students to take LSAT–India at ease. We truly wish the most seamless experience for the aspiring students, and we are confident that this a great step towards creating more student-centric processes within the Indian Legal Education spectrum. We are grateful to have our ongoing partnership between JGLS and LSAC that is allowing us to enable such innovations for the Indian Legal education.

Professor (Dr.) S.G. Sreejith, Executive Dean, Jindal Global Law School said, “An early admission process is a very a standard process in international universities. Jindal Global Law School has always strived to lead the internationalization of legal education in India, and this effort is yet another step to benchmark JGLS with global legal education best practices. More importantly, taking the March Test and securing admission in April itself will contribute to the peace of mind and emotional wellness of the students by alleviating their anxieties over the future of their legal education. In fact, we anticipate that JGLS will be able to admit up to 75% of their total seats on the basis of LSAT–India March 2021 examination to be held on 25th March. Therefore, we sincerely believe that students taking this examination in March will have a great opportunity to have a head start in their legal education and will be advantaged by the virtue of being able to finalize their future plans well before their Board Examinations.

While the June examination comes as a wonderful second opportunity, the March examination gives the students an early advantage in securing their future. This initiative particularly brings to the surface some unique advantages for the law aspirants taking the LSAT–India examination in March. Professor Anand Prakash Mishra, Director of Law Admissions at 91̽ and Associate Dean of Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) articulates three key reasons why law aspirants should consider completing their test on 25th March, “Firstly, a chance to secure an admission in JGLS will simply double if you take the examination in March. On an average, more than 3500 candidates appearing for LSAT–India Test are unable to secure an offer of admission for 5-year BA/BBALLB programme given the highly competitive landscape we operate in today. If students take the March examination, and if for some unfortunate reason they don’t qualify for the admission process at JGLS, they get a wonderful second opportunity in June to score better and qualify for a seat. Secondly, the March Examination is the first law entrance test in the country in the year 2021. When the June examination gets administered, students face extreme pressure to appear in multiple entrance examinations that are usually scheduled around that time of the year. The March Examination will allow students to focus on their legal education entrance without the stress of multiple other examinations. Thirdly, and very importantly, one’s success in the examination in March will help a student secure a seat in JGLS even before they take the 12th Board Examinations. This will play an instrumental role in defining their future well in advance and reducing the undue stress that may be caused during their board examinations. This is extremely important since the ‘covid-anxiety’ has already caused excessive stress to the youth in today’s time. Therefore, this will help alleviate some of that duress, and help students feel more secure about their aspirations to study in a world-class law school.

JINDAL GLOBAL LAW SCHOOL (JGLS) ENTERS GLOBAL TOP 100 IN THE WORLD /blog/2021/03/04/jindal-global-law-school-jgls-enters-global-top-100-in-the-world/ Thu, 04 Mar 2021 02:32:45 +0000 http://jgu.edu.in/blog/?p=2282 Continue Reading]]> AT RANK 76 IN THE WORLD, JGLS IS INDIA’S NUMBER ONE LAW SCHOOL AND THE ONLY INDIAN LAW SCHOOLIN THE QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS BY SUBJECT (LAW) 2021

Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of 91̽ (JGU) is now ranked 76 out of all law schools globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2021. This makes JGLS the number one law school in India once again, and the only Indian Law School to be ranked this year.

 • JGLS is India’s Number One Law School, and the only Indian Law School to be ranked in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2021.
 • Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) is now ranked 76 globally by the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2021.
 • Out of 976 that were considered globally by QS, 320 law schools were ranked. JGLS is the only law school to be ranked from India.
 • JGLS is ranked 33 and 58 in the world in the parameters of ‘Employer Reputation’ and ‘Academic Reputation’ respectively in the QS World University Ranking by subject 2021.
 • JGLS’s current global rank of 76 compared to previous rank in the 101-150 bracket is driven by a 45% increase in research citation and a 25% increase in the H-index of research output of JGLS.
 • JGLS is now ranked alongside highly reputable law schools including University of Bristol, University of Manchester, and George Washington University.
 • JGLS is ranked above some leading law schools including in the University of Nottingham, University of Warwick, University of Leeds, Griffith University, York University, Cardiff University, and SOAS in the UK.
 • Overall, JGU scored in 7 subjects in the ‘Social Science & Management’ category and in 2 subjects in the ‘Arts & Humanities’ category. JGU academic reputation in ‘Social Sciences & Management’ increased by 10% compared to the last year, which reflects the scholarly impact of research done by the faculty members of JGU.

Out of 976 law schools considered globally, only 320 made it to the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2021. The number of law schools around the world that are considered in these prestigious rankings is substantially more than institutions considered in other subject areas, which highlights the intense competition among law schools in the world. JGLS, as the first and the only Indian law school to find a place in this year, puts India on the global map for legal education and higher education.

With a global rank of 76 this year, JGLS has jumped from the 101-150 bracket in the previous year. JGLS is ranked 33 and 58 in the world in ‘Employer Reputation’ and ‘Academic Reputation’ respectively, which are the two most important parameters in the QS World University Ranking by Subject. Jindal Global Law School’s significant improvement from the last year is driven by a 45% increase in research citation and a 25% increase in the H-index of research output of JGLS.

Reacting to this remarkable achievement, Mr. Naveen Jindal, Founding Chancellor, 91̽, said, “The year 2020 has been a challenging year for higher education institutions worldwide. 91̽ has not only demonstrated transformation and resilience in these difficult times, but also led the path towards academic excellence. JGLS has risen in the ranks to enter the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject this year. As the only law school in India to feature in these rankings, it gives me great pride to see Jindal Global Law School feature among the world’s finest law schools. JGLS has put India on the world map of providing high-quality legal education, research and training.”

Chancellor Mr. Jindal, added that “As a twelve-year old university, this achievement is commendable. I congratulate all the members of our JGU family for making this possible through their commitment, dedication, team-work and perseverance in building a world-class institution. It is indeed a proud moment to be able to contribute consistently to the building of our country and the educational landscape. I congratulate our Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, and his outstanding colleagues in JGU and JGLS for bringing this important distinction to India.”&Բ;

To produce the rankings for this year, QS analysed close to 14 million unique scholarly papers, producing more than 80 million citations. 1453 institutions were ranked across 51 subjects in 5 broad subject areas (including social sciences which includes law), resulting in over 16,981 published entries. These figures reflect the scale behind this huge undertaking that QS carried out in order to produce the 2021 Subject Rankings, and the magnitude of global competition.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice-Chancellor, 91̽ welcomed this important milestone and said, “The news of JGLS being ranked 76 in the world is not only a significant achievement for JGU, but is also an extraordinary moment for Indian legal education. Achieving a place in the top 100 law schools in the world and sharing the stage with the world’s leading universities testifies JGU’s aspiration to be a world-class university. This remarkable achievement of rising from the 101-150 rank band last year to 76th position this year in the coveted QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2021 is a landmark development in our relatively short institutional journey.”

Dr Raj Kumar added that “Our continuous efforts will be to further deepen our classroom instruction, instructional methods, global cooperation and quality of research, and elevate the quality of legal education in India. Being recognized as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ by the Government of India this academic year, along with the global lead rankings, only strengthens our faith in our ability to contribute positively to the higher education landscape of India”.&Բ;

Established in 2009, JGU is private, non-profit university that is committed to promoting social sciences, arts and the humanities. Entering the elite top 100 of the world in the competitive discipline of law breaks longstanding stereotypes and prejudices about the ability of private universities to become world-class to place India on the world map.

Reminiscing over JGLS’ short journey since establishment in 2009, Professor Raj Kumar said, “JGLS being the first school at JGU makes this a very special moment. Particularly, as we started 2020 with one of the most unprecedented crises of our times, to imagine that we would use this as an opportunity to not just overcome the challenges, but take a leap forward to achieve this is truly very humbling, and fills me with a great sense of gratitude today I am grateful to the founding Chancellor and benefactor, Mr. Naveen Jindal for his vision, leadership and philanthropic support that brought us to where we are today. I deeply appreciate the outstanding contributions of my colleagues and the leadership team of JGLS, as well as the faculty for bringing a world-class learning experience to the students, and of course our students who have demonstrated a deep sense of dedication and commitment to their education.”

Furthermore, JGU scored in 9 out of 51 subjects within two broad areas of social science & management (7 out of 9) and arts & humanities (2 out of 9). These subjects include Business & Management Studies, Economics, Law, Social Policy, Sociology, Art & Design and Performing Arts. Overall, JGU’s score in academic reputation in ‘Social Sciences’ increased by 10%, which is a testament to the phenomenal academic achievement and scholarly impact of the work of JGU’s faculty.

On this monumental accomplishment, Professor (Dr.) S.G. Sreejith, Executive Dean, JGLS said, “JGLS started with 100 students and we have grown to over 4000 students in about a decade. During this period, we remain committed to our vision to bring world-class legal education to Indian students, and to provide them with a global perspective on law and legal developments. Today, JGLS being ranked alongside highly reputable law schools from where several of our own faculty members have graduated. In fact, it is very humbling for us to see that this JGLS has been able to surge ahead of some leading law schools of the world. This is humbling and it gives our vision a greater impetus to continue to enhance the experience of students and faculty members.”&Բ;

Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar, JGU, while responding to this achievement said,“JGU has always aspired to become a world-class university in India with a mission to create global leaders of tomorrow. The news of JGLS being ranked as the 76th best law school in the world is an important milestone for us. This is a recognition of our pursuit of excellence in the field of legal education where our decade-long journey has culminated in ten inter-disciplinary schools, with more than 6600 students and over 830 full-time faculty members.”

LSAT-INDIA ENTRANCE EXAM TO BE HELD ON 25TH MARCH 2021 /blog/2021/02/02/lsat-india-entrance-exam-to-be-held-on-25th-march-2021/ Tue, 02 Feb 2021 07:55:30 +0000 http://jgu.edu.in/blog/?p=2248 Continue Reading]]> JINDAL GLOBAL LAW SCHOOL BEGINS ADMISSIONS FOR 2021-22

LSAT–India is India’s First Law Entrance Test being held for the Academic Year 2021-22. Application closes on 14 March for its first administration. Law Aspirants can take the Test from Home: LSAT—India 2021 is Online Remote-Proctored & Artificial Intelligence – Enabled Law Entrance Test.

Admission process to all the academic programmes offered at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of O.P. Jindal Global Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University (JGU) has started on February 1, 2021. JGLS, which is ranked as the No. 1 Law School in India and South Asia as per the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2020, offers five programmes, namely BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons) and BA (Hons) in Legal Studies available after Class XII; LLB 3-year programme for undergraduates and the LLM programme in different specialisations.

“Jindal Global Law School’s decision to offer an early admissions process, which will enable the LSAT-India entrance exam to be taken in an AI-Enabled and Remote Proctored manner is a significant decision for three important reasons, said Professor (Dr) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, 91̽ and Dean, Jindal Global Law School, while announcing the admissions process for the upcoming academic year”.

Professor Kumar said, “First, this is an Early Admission Process. Students writing 12th standard board examinations and also preparing for entrance exams always have a tough time every year balancing both these competing aspirations. This year students can take the LSAT-India 2021 early and can secure their admission to the law school and write their board exams in an absolute peaceful state of mind.”

Professor Kumar said, “second, there was no opportunity in the past to law aspirants to improve their score. Law entrance exams were always a one-time opportunity. If it was a bad day for any student, you lose your chance for the year. Now, the students get a second chance in June 2021 to better their score and seek admission in case, they don’t do well in the March exam. Students had no option but to wait for the next year if they didn’t qualify LSAT–India cutoff earlier.”

For example, in 2020, cutoff for JGLS was 60 Percentile score in LSAT-India. Anyone having received a score up to 59.99 percentile could never get an offer of admission to the 5-year BA/BBALLB programmes. This year students will get another chance to improve their score and can get a second opportunity for admission, even though the cut-off may be higher in 2021.

Professor Kumar said, “The conflict of entrance test with various class XII board exams has been completely avoided by double administration of LSAT–India Test. In the past year, the students of IB and Cambridge boards were adversely affected when exams happened only once in the month of May.”

Professor Anand Prakash Mishra, Director of Law Admissions & Associate Dean of the Jindal Global Law School observed, “JGLS has always attracted the best talent from around the country and even abroad in all its academic programmes. More so in the LLM and LLB 3-year programme, it has attracted graduates of many leading international universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, etc. The dual administration of LSAT–India Test in an Online and Remote-Proctored format will help international applicants in a significant manner. The students can plan their test and secure admission in a better way. Our academic year starts on 1st of August 2021 and there will be adequate time available with the students and parents to prepare for joining the law school.”

Admission to JGLS is purely based on merit in the LSAT—India Test in all the academic programmes. Every seat in the flagship 5-year BA/BBALLB Hons. programme is filled only on the basis of LSAT—India percentile score, whereas the law school also utilises the JSAT-Law Entrance Test conducted by Pearson VUE and few other Test scores for its LLB, LLM and BA (Hons) Legal Studies programmes.

For the first time in its history, Jindal Global Law School as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ and in line with the leading law schools of the world is following an early admission process issuing the first set of admission offers immediately after the March LSAT-India exam.

LSAT–India Test was launched in India in the year 2009 when Jindal Global Law School started its first academic year. It’s owned and administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) based in Pennsylvania in the USA. LSAC is world’s first law admission test organisation and since 1947, has been conducting LSAT Test used by over 200 world’s leading law schools in the USA, Canada and Australia. LSAT–India Test has four sections of 35 minutes each in Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension. This 2-hour 20 minutes test is objective type test, which became a fully Online and Remote-Proctored Test since 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. Students can download past year question papers for free and register online for LSAT—India 2021 exam now at its official website:

A Conversation with Prof Arjya Majumdar- Childhood Aspirations, Growing up in Calcutta, Superheroes, Meteoric Career Highs and More /blog/2019/09/30/a-conversation-with-prof-arjya-majumdar-childhood-aspirations-growing-up-in-calcutta-superheroes-meteoric-career-highs-and-more/ Mon, 30 Sep 2019 09:55:50 +0000 http://jgu.edu.in/blog/?p=941 Continue Reading]]>

Prof. Arjya Majumdar started teaching at the Jindal Global Law School after a seven-year stint in corporate law. Today he is the Director of Academic Planning, Coordination and Interdisciplinary, as well as the Director of Admissions and Outreach at JGU. Once an “aspiring tram driver” now puts students in the driver’s seat of their careers. The trained mountaineer, now enables them to scale new heights of personal and professional growth.

Prof. Majumdar’s training with Himalayan Mountaineering Institute not only ignited his passion for the environment but taught him an important lesson that when you surmount challenges whether physical or otherwise, you gain in self-confidence. It’s an important takeaway that he seriously hopes to imbibe in his students too. He taught himself to play the guitar when he was 16. It’s probably something to do with him being “intellectually curious” as he describes himself. And with time, he started realizing his passion for varied subjects and areas.

He quotes scientist Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park as he tries to highlight the importance of interdisciplinarity in higher education. The characters in Hollywood blockbuster were so caught up in finding out whether they could clone dinosaurs that they forgot to ask the question; whether they should. “Those are two different questions from two different perspectives. That’s why interdisciplinary is important. It’s important for the holistic growth of students and in giving them broader perspectives,” he says.

His favorite superheroes are Ironman and Batman. The reasoning is simple, “All other superheroes in DC and Marvel have superpowers. These two are among them because of their intellect, grit and sheer determination.” What fantastic qualities to learn from a superhero, we mean, a faculty, who practices what he actually preaches!

Finding his passion and the roller-coaster of Corporate Law

As a young boy growing up in pre-liberalized West Bengal, Prof. Majumdar nurtured his love for theater, culture and music. Growing up in a middle-class family background, along with the social and political milieu of Kolata dealing with frequent strikes in Kolkata meant things weren’t always easy. “It gave me a huge benefit in terms of opening my mind and my horizons. It was a brilliant time, which in many ways raised my intellectual curiosity, wanting to try out different things” he says.

By the time Prof. Majumdar had completed his high school education from St. Joseph’s College, his childlike interests of becoming a tram driver had evolved into being a journalist. The road to NUJS had actually put a spanner in his wheels. “The entrance test result made me realize that there are many learned people studying law, and that they think I might be worthy of it too. So, I gave it a shot, enjoyed it and soon after my BA LLB went to Tulane University, US for my Masters,” he adds.

Soon after his Masters, Prof. Majumdar joined the corporate law firm Fox & Mandal and stayed on for 4 years. Within three months of his joining the firm, he was asked to man their London office. It was practically unheard of for a first year Associate. The high was followed by the low of the 2008 global financial crisis. “I went without a salary for three months but continued to work. It was an interesting and humbling time,” he says in retrospect. He would go on to join Desai & Diwanji, another corporate law firm later on.

Industry’s loss, academia’s gain

Prof. Majumdar joined JGLS in 2013 and teaches corporate law and ancillary subjects at the university. He is also the Director for Academic Planning, Coordination and Interdisciplinarity and looks after the university’s rankings. “Within a span of ten years, the university have made it to the top 2.67% of all universities globally. We hope to better our position in the world rankings in the future. The quality of our alumni in the industry and our academic network gives us our reputation,” he says proudly.

Network and reputation to boast of

In a short span of 10 years, JGU has mustered 250 international collaborations with top universities around the world. Prof. Majumdar asserts that there has been a dedicated effort to be more international and this is revealed in the university’s research focus as well. “We offer substantial rewards to faculty members to publish in top journals. We consistently try to build as many quality partnerships all over the world as we can,” he speaks of the efforts.

What makes JGU global?

According to Prof. Majumdar, there are three distinct reasons why JGU is a truly global university. Firstly, the university hires faculty with at least one international degree or international experience. “Secondly, our courses are steeped in the globally accepted practices and conform to globally accepted curricula. Finally, our pedagogies are global in nature, like the emphasis on case studies, which is followed at Harvard Law School,” he explains.

Hurdles for interdisciplinarity in India

Traditionally India has tried to set itself apart through super specialty. As early as in class 11th students are asked to choose between Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities etc. “The problem with this is that you fail to understand that there is a world beyond your discipline. A law student should know a bit about finance and business. How else do you advise a client on business law? That has become a cornerstone to our approach to interdisciplinarity,” he adds.

Interdisciplinarity at JGU

With its eight schools, JGU has an inherent advantage that lends itself to interdisciplinary learning. Prof. Majumdar talks about the cross-listed electives from different schools that can be chosen by all students at the University. “We find that the students who do take up the cross-listed electives tend to have a better understanding of the world they live in. For future professionals and leaders, it’s really important to have such holistic education,” he claims.

The man behind the academic

Ask Prof. Majumdar one world problem he would like to fix, and pat comes the reply – climate crisis. Anything he would like to change about his life? He ponders and says that he regrets not studying engineering or an MBA but adds that he wouldn’t trade his life at all. Book he wants to write? “It would be to my son telling him about my life and mistakes I have made. Hopefully he won’t follow mine but make his own.” It’s something he wishes for his students too.
