P. Jindal Global University\ncelebrated its eight anniversary with a round table discussion on <strong>Building\nWorld Class Universities<\/strong> on 30th September 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The distinguished participants were\nMr Kewal Kumar Sharma, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development,\nGovernment of India, H.E. Ms Mariela Cruz Alvarez, Ambassador of the Republic\nof Costa Rica, Ms. Sun Meixing, Head of Education Affairs, Embassy of People&#8217;s\nRepublic of China in India, Dr. Bertrand de Hartingh, Counsellor for\nCooperation and Cultural Affairs, Embassy of France in India, Mr. Stephan\nLanzinger, Counsellor and Head of Science &amp; Technology Section, Embassy of\nGermany in India and Mr Frederick Hawkins, Vice Consul, Embassy of the United\nStates of America, New Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roundtable was organized to\ninitiate a dialogue amongst international diplomats and guests towards\nunderstanding world class universities and rankings of that have created new\nopportunities for Indian universities to aspire towards seeking excellence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paradigm shift in the Indian\nhigher education system is being promoted through efforts to create world class\nuniversities in both the public and the private sector among global university\nleaders about the key current challenges that national higher education systems\naround the world are confronted with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mr Kewal Kumar Sharma<\/strong>, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development,\nGovernment of India, addressing the gathering spoke about the challenges and\nhurdles in Indian higher education system and how India is keen to create world\nclass universities. He lauded the effort of private sector which has come on\nits own to set up \u201cUniversities like this one(JGU)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Sharma informed the gathering\nabout Government recent proposal for private sector and public sector \u201cto set\nup institution of global repute\u201d, which he called, \u201cinstitution of eminence\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further added, \u201cThere will be an\nempowered committee of experts, comprising of distinguished persons who would\nanalyse these proposals on merit. We have already asked ten from private sector\nand ten from public sector institutions to come forward with their proposals\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRanking, does remain kind of an aim\nand goal; but what is more important from education point of view, countries\npoint of view is the quality of education is, what ought to be, both in terms\nof where we broadly headed, be it in terms of economic development education\nshould lead us to become better human being\u201d, Mr. Sharma added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founding Vice Chancellor,\nProfessor(Dr) <strong>C. Raj Kumar<\/strong> said, \u201cAs we aspire to increase the quantity\nand raise the quality of higher education institutions in India, we need to\ndraw from experiences around the world. There is a reason why there is not a\nsingle world-class university run on a for-profit basis. Public and private\nuniversities, which are top ranked in the world and are reputed for excellence\nin teaching, research and capacity-building, have all been not-for-profit\ninstitutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\nadded, \u201cThe growth expansion and evolution of the Indian\nhigher education sector today has indeed transformed our country in\nunimaginable ways. However, there is a conscious need based upon a sense of\nconviction and purpose to build institutions of global excellence at a level\nwhich can compete with international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on Costa Rica being a country\nwithout army, <strong>H.E. Ms <\/strong><strong>Mariela\nCruz Alvarez<\/strong> said, \u201cBeing defenceless\nis our best defense. The decision we took in 1948 reaffirmed our commitment to\nthe higher principles of life. We embarked on the task to unlock the full\npotential of our citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quoting from Bhagwat Gita, Ms Alvarez said\nthat we as teachers our role is to ignite students\u2019 mind with larger sense of\npurpose and focus. World class Universities needs to transmit that passion and\nfocus in interactions with young minds. \u201cA person who is awake, not in denial\nand ready to give the very best, one who is proactive, motivated, vulnerable,\nfeel other people\u2019s suffering, open minded and sensitive\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Bertrand de Hartingh<\/strong>, Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs, Embassy\nof France was in the opinion that competing for ranking should not be the soul\ngoal rather it should be \u201chigher education for all\u201d. He defined a World Class\nUniversities to be \u201can open world university\u201d, which receives students coming\nfrom all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Hartingh also stressed on the\nmodel of multi-lateral engagements of universities rather than only bi-lateral\nMoUs, where multiple universities come in agreement in a global platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking the discourse forward, <strong>Mr.\nStephan Lanzinger<\/strong>, Counsellor and Head of Science &amp; Technology Section,\nEmbassy of Germany in India spoke about internationalisations, openness and\nautonomy of institutions.&nbsp; The role of\nhigher education is to \u201cprovide a purpose and a vision\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting how the government under various projects\nstrove to consistently improve the quality of education at all levels in China, <strong>Ms. Sun Meixing,<\/strong> Head of Education Affairs, Embassy of People&#8217;s Republic of\nChina in India said, \u201cIn 1990\u2019s the government\nunder various projects aimed to improve the higher education institutions of\nthe country, as part of the effort over 100 universities were selected for\ndeveloping and enhancing the quality of higher education.&nbsp; The government allocated specific funds and\nresources to these institutions as major centers of research and excellence\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Round Table noted that India faced particular\nchallenges in terms of numbers, public versus private institutions and in terms\nof providing equitable access to education for all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These objectives need to be dovetailed into the larger\nobjective of having World Class Universities in India, the Round Table\nconcluded. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>O.
