The Centre hosted an online panel discussion titled ‘AI on Trial: Is AI Guilty of Copyright Infringement?’, conceptualised as a mock trial examining the intersection of artificial intelligence, copyright law, and creative practice. Chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Raman Mittal, a member of the expert committee on copyright and generative AI constituted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the session brought together a diverse group of speakers including legal practitioners, AI engineers, and creators. Panellists included Ms. Neha Dhir, Founder of Block Legal; representatives from Pivot Intelligence; and Ms. Namita Bhaladhare, an AI-driven music creator, with the discussion moderated by Mr. Souradeep Mukhopadhyay, Assistant Director at the Centre. The discussion examined key issues surrounding the training of AI systems, their use in creative industries, and the copyright implications arising from these processes. By combining legal, technical, and creative perspectives, the session offered a practical and interdisciplinary exploration of emerging challenges in AI-related copyright governance.
