Office of Sustainability undertakes textile recycling initiative
In June 2026, the Office of Sustainability of JGU concluded a campus-wide textile collection and recycling initiative, reinforcing the university's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable resource management.
As part of the initiative, 2,420 kg of used clothing and textiles were collected from the JGU community and diverted from landfills through responsible recycling channels. The collected materials were processed through authorised textile recycling partners, ensuring that reusable materials were recovered and reintegrated into the production cycle wherever possible.
The environmental impact of this initiative is significant. Based on standard textile recycling impact metrics, the recycling of 2,420 kg of clothing resulted in the avoidance of approximately 7,260 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This is equivalent to the carbon sequestered annually by hundreds of mature trees and represents a meaningful contribution toward reducing the University's indirect environmental footprint.
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the initiative helped conserve an estimated 6.534 million litres of water. Textile production, particularly cotton cultivation and fabric manufacturing, is among the most water-intensive industrial activities globally. By extending the lifecycle of textiles and promoting material recovery, the initiative contributed to substantial water savings and reduced pressure on natural resources.
The programme also served as an important awareness-building exercise for students, faculty, staff, and residential communities across the campus. Through targeted outreach efforts, collection drives, and sustainability communications, members of the JGU community were encouraged to reflect on responsible consumption patterns and the environmental consequences of textile waste.
Globally, the fashion and textile sector generates millions of tonnes of waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills or is incinerated. Initiatives such as JGU's textile recycling programme support the transition toward a circular economy by promoting reuse, recycling, and resource efficiency. They also contribute directly to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
The success of this campaign demonstrates the collective commitment of the JGU community to sustainability and environmental stewardship. It highlights how small individual actions, when undertaken collectively, can generate measurable environmental benefits and contribute to broader institutional sustainability objectives. Through initiatives such as textile recycling, JGU continues to demonstrate that sustainability is not only an institutional priority but also a shared responsibility embraced by its students, faculty, and staff.
Building on the momentum of this initiative, the Office of Sustainability plans to continue promoting waste reduction, resource recovery, and community engagement programmes that support JGU's vision of becoming a leading sustainable university. Future initiatives will focus on expanding circular economy practices, increasing participation across stakeholder groups, and creating opportunities for the campus community to contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
