Public resources for lifelong learning

JGU shares its knowledge beyond its own students. The Global Library is open to all, and entry is free. Members of the public can also attend open lectures on campus and online, enrol in free courses on SWAYAM, read published research and join live online discussions. None of these require enrolment at the University.

Global Library: Free and Open to All

The JGU Global Library welcomes everyone. Entry is free, and students, faculty and researchers from other institutions, government officials and members of the general public are all invited to visit.

Visitors can consult the library’s print collections and use its electronic resources inside the library, on the University’s wireless network or on library computers. The collections include print books, e-books, journals, newspapers and magazines, films, and literature, legal, business and socio-economic databases. Visitors can also use the Online Public Access Catalogue to search them. Study zones, research guides, assistive technologies and the library’s special collections add to the experience. The special collections include the Soli Sorabjee, R. Sudarshan, Indiana University and Ram S. Jakhu (Air and Space Law) donor collections and a Children’s Collection as well.

On-Campus Public Lectures

Guest lectures, panel discussions, and seminars are an essential part of teaching and learning at JGU. Most are open to a general audience, whatever their educational background, which encourages interdisciplinary participation and lifelong learning. The public lectures are available on the official JGU YouTube channel.

Highlights from the past year

  • JSGP Open Lecture: “Are the Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture Underestimated? A Disaggregated Analysis for India”, by Prof. Shreekant Gupta, Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (Brookings India) and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi.

  • JCGS Guest Lecture: “Themes, Trends and Patterns in US Foreign Policy: The Shape of Things to Come and the Repercussions for the Global South”, by Dr. Monish Tourangbam, Director of the Kalinga Institute of Indo-Pacific Studies (KIIPS).

Free Lectures on SWAYAM

SWAYAM is the Government of India’s free online course platform (MOOC) for university and college learners. The Ministry of Education and the UNICEF Chair of Vulnerability Studies have joined JGU’s Centre for New Economics Studies (CNES) to offer an interdisciplinary course of e-lectures on SWAYAM. The course is free to enrol in and to learn from.

Publicly Available Research

In early summer 2024, Professor Deepanshu Mohan was appointed Visiting Professor at the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre at the London School of Economics (LSE). In his first year there, he carried out research and writing and shared the ethnographic work done in provincial parts of Cambodia. That fieldwork took place mostly between 2016 and 2019, across projects supported by the JGU Research Grant Committee, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and other funding networks. His visits to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang province and other cities were supported by local researchers who worked closely with the CNES team on field interviews, translation and documentation.

Some of this work is openly accessible:

  • Street vending in urban “informal” markets: Reflections from case-studies of street vendors in Delhi (India) and Phnom Penh City (Cambodia):

  • The Ethnic-Religious Minority of Cham in Cambodia: Reflections from an Ethno-Historical Account:

  • Governing Dynamics of Urban Informality: A Case Study of Local Markets in Phnom Penh (Cambodia):

Accessible Live Discussions

The Law and Marginalisation Clinic at the Centre for Justice, Law and Society (CJLS), Jindal Global Law School, runs an Instagram Live series, “The New Law: A Conversation on Your Rights and Remedies”. Guest speakers discuss themes such as healthcare rights for transgender and gender-diverse persons and the challenges of accessing education and employment. The sessions are available on Instagram Live through the @lawandmarginalisation account.
