Student Council and Elected Representation
JGU students run their own elected councils and take part in university decision-making through them. Each of JGU’s 12 schools has a democratically elected Student Council, and every full-time student of a school is a member of its council.

How Councils Are Elected

• Elections are held every year. Each council serves one academic year, covering the Fall and Spring semesters.
• An independent Election Commission runs the elections. It is made up of one outgoing Core Council member from each school, together with faculty members.
• The Student Council Constitution sets out eligibility, qualifications and the role of each position. [link]

Independence of the Councils
The Student Councils are led by students. They elect their own office-bearers, set their own agendas, run their own activities and represent students on academic, professional and campus-life matters. [Add if true: councils manage their own activity budget; faculty advisers have no vote.]

Student Representation in University Decision-Making

• Council representatives meet the Vice-Chancellor and senior administration at least twice a year on academics, employability and campus life.
• Every school elects student members to the Committee on Gender Sensitisation Against Sexual Harassment (COGSASH). Women make up 50% of the student members, who are elected through the Election Commission.
• Council members take part in academic and disciplinary proceedings and act as the link between students, faculty, administration and staff.
