Waste sent to landfill

JGU separates waste at the source, cuts what it can, and sends the rest to an authorised agency, so that as little as possible reaches a landfill. It measures what is generated, what is composted or recycled, and what is left over.

Segregation
All campus waste is separated at the source using trio-bins indoors and outdoors. Specialised collection points handle hazardous waste, electronic waste and textile waste.

Waste Handled Without Landfill

  • Food waste: a technology-assisted Organic Waste Converter processes 500 kg of food waste daily at capacity. Food waste was thus diverted from landfill and more than 300 kgs of methane ( approx.8,064 kg CO鈧俥) avoided.
  • Vermicomposting: earthworms compost organic residue in a pit near Service Block 4.
  • Textile waste: the Office of Sustainability runs regular drives to recycle and upcycle clothing, Paper and packaging was recycled in 2025.
  • E-waste: a permanent e-waste bin is available to the community, with collection drives at regular intervals,
  • Paper avoided: paperless examinations avoided 76,80,000 pages and 60 m³ of landfill space in AY 2025–26.

Waste Sent for Disposal
Waste that cannot be reduced, recycled or composted is handed to an authorised and registered agency, JBMEPL, under a memorandum of understanding dated 1 January 2023. The agency disposes of and recycles the waste at its plant nearby.

Dining hall waste is weighed after every meal, three times a day, and monthly averages are tracked against a 30% reduction target.
