Low-Carbon Energy Tracking

JGU tracks the electricity it uses and the share that comes from low-carbon sources, mainly on-site solar. Solar PV is installed on rooftops across hostels, academic buildings and the Vidya Devi Jindal Dining Block, and new arrays were commissioned in 2025 at Gate 1, Gate 2 and the Naveen Jindal Sports Academy. The installed capacity is 2.4 MW of on-site solar PV.
On-site solar generation more than doubled in a year, and rose by more than 200% over two years (2023–2025). Avoided emissions are calculated with the grid emission factor of 0.82 kg CO鈧俥 per kWh published by the Central Electricity Authority, Government of India.

Using Less Energy
An external energy audit found that grid electricity consumption fell even as the campus population grew, and certified that JGU's energy-saving initiatives are well implemented and noteworthy. Measures include 100% LED lighting (an estimated 50–80% reduction in lighting load), BLDC fans (50–65%), occupancy sensors and intelligent controls (20–30%), VRV air-conditioning (15–40%) and Kingspan Quadcore insulated panels (up to 20% of cooling and heating load).

Next Steps
JGU will expand on-site solar capacity, explore open-access renewable energy and progressively reduce the grid and fossil-fuel share of its energy. Energy performance is checked every year through the external energy audit and reported in the Sustainable Development Report. This work supports SDG Targets 7.2, 7.3, 7.b, 11.6 and 13.2
