Policy on Anti-Slavery, Human Trafficking, Forced Labour and Child Labour

Policy Details

  • Policy Title: Anti-Slavery & Human Trafficking Policy

  • Year Reviewed: 2026

  • Primary SDG Alignment: SDG 8 (Target 8.7), SDG 10 and SDG 16 (Target 16.2)

1. Policy Objective & Purpose

JGU works against modern slavery, human trafficking, forced labour and child labour in its own operations, its business relationships and its supply chains. The policy takes a zero-tolerance approach to exploitative labour and gives effect to the commitment in the Modern Slavery Statement.

2. Scope & Applicability

The policy applies to all employees, vendors and service providers, and suppliers and contractors are expected to meet the same standard. It extends to international collaborations, with a focus on human rights and fair employment.

3. Guiding Principles

  • Zero tolerance: no forced, bonded or exploitative labour in any form.

  • Voluntary employment: every worker takes up work freely and may leave voluntarily, with no reason required and no restriction beyond the university’s separation policy.

  • Shared responsibility: partners and vendors must uphold the same ethical standards and operate transparently.

4. Key Operational Provisions

  • A total prohibition of forced, bonded, indentured and involuntary labour, recruitment fees and the retention of identity documents.

  • A prohibition of child labour, in line with the ILO child labour conventions and Article 23 of the Constitution of India.

  • Mandatory anti-slavery due diligence clauses for vendors, with requests for assurances from partners and supplier codes of conduct that are transparent.

  • A commitment to end partnerships with any entity that violates human rights.

  • Workers cannot be forced to continue on a project against their will, and wages must meet legal requirements.

5. Roles & Institutional Governance

  • Anti-Slavery Committee: appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, and responsible for oversight.

  • Compliance Office: coordinates due diligence and reporting.

  • Procurement Office: applies anti-slavery clauses and the Supplier Code of Conduct in sourcing.

6. Grievance Redressal, Reporting & Whistleblower Protection

JGU provides clear reporting channels for suspected violations, and all reports are investigated promptly and transparently. Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern or takes part in an investigation is prohibited. Where a violation is found, the policy provides for restorative victim compensation.

7. Monitoring, Performance Indicators & Public Reporting

JGU publishes a Modern Slavery Statement each year, supported by supplier due diligence and campus-wide awareness training.

8. Policy Review Cycle

The Modern Slavery Statement is updated every year, and the policy is reviewed alongside it.
