Outreach and free services

The JGU Health Centre serves the wider community around the University as well as the campus. Led by a consultant surgeon with a skilled medical and nursing team, it provides round-the-clock care and takes its preventive work out to the people who need it.

A Health Centre that never closes

The Centre has 40 fully equipped beds, including an 8-bed Isolation Unit and a 6-bed Emergency Unit. Resident Medical Officers, nurses and administrative staff keep it running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Separate male and female inpatient wards support observation and short-term admission. Two dressing rooms, open round the clock, handle wound care and minor procedures. Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support and patient-transport ambulances are placed across campus for fast response from hostels, classrooms and sports facilities. They are also stationed at the sports and polo grounds and at major university events. Electric golf carts bring patients to the Centre.

Free care for the whole community

Students, faculty, staff, contract workers, construction workers, lower-grade employees and their families can access free outpatient consultations 24×7. Inpatient care is available when medically needed. The in-house laboratory provides diagnostic tests free of charge. Workers also receive complimentary medicines and basic investigations as appropriate, free ambulance transport within campus, and timely referral to higher centres. Free consultations and essential medicines are also given to underprivileged members of the local community.

Taking health to where people work

The Health Centre holds periodic health screening camps for construction workers at on-campus sites, and medical check-up camps for JGU employees during semester breaks. Highly subsidised blood screening camps run with Dr Lal PathLabs, and student-led blood donation drives are held with the Rotaract Club.

Ready to respond

Regular CPR, First Aid and hygiene workshops, including training on Automated External Defibrillators, build emergency readiness among students, employees and community members.

Health education

The Health Centre circulates regular health advisories based on guidance from the WHO, CDC and ICMR. Recent topics include air pollution, heat-related illness, monsoon diseases, anaemia, urinary tract infections, conjunctivitis, viral skin infections, Type 1 diabetes, epilepsy awareness, women’s health on World Health Day, and guidance for visiting international fellows. During periods of poor air quality, the Centre also distributes protective masks. It runs newsletters on seasonal wellness, fitness and nutrition, and workshops on yoga, physiotherapy and nutrition counselling.

What is next

JGU plans to expand this outreach through mobile health vans and specialty camps in neighbouring areas as well.
