Sustainable Practices Targets

JGU measures how its community commutes, and sets targets to make that commuting more sustainable. The measures cover vehicles owned by the university, shuttles for staff, students and visitors, and the emissions from employees' journeys.

What JGU Measures

  • Share of the vehicle fleet that is electric: 35% in 2025.
  • Campus golf carts that are fossil-fuel free: 100%, with 20 electric golf carts serving about 9,000 students daily, plus 2 specialised wheelchair-accessible units.
  • Electric bikes and charging points: 30 electric bikes and 15 EV charging points.
  • Emissions avoided by the electric golf carts: 60.706 tonnes of CO鈧俥 a year, measured against a petrol-fleet benchmark.
  • Employee use of the free staff shuttle, recorded as part of Scope 3 commuting data.
  • Annual Scope 3 emissions for Category 7, Employee Commuting.
  • Women among on-campus vehicle operators: 48%.

Targets

  • Keep 100% of campus golf carts fossil-free.
  • Increase the electric share of university-owned vehicles each year, and expand charging capacity.
  • Reduce emissions from employee commuting year on year.
  • Keep personal and university vehicles off campus pathways, except ambulances and electric carts, and extend the policy to third-party vendors.
  • Reach net zero emissions by 2035.

How the Targets Are Met

Staff shuttles run free of cost for employees, most of whom live near the campus. Students and staff can take shuttles to the nearest metro station at a nominal fee, which encourages public transport. A no-vehicle policy keeps pathways walkable, and the electric golf cart fleet gives people a way to get around beyond walking.
