JGU invests in sustainable transport modes, in line with SDG Target 11.2, which calls for safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport for all.
Free Campus Shuttle
Staff and faculty who live near the campus travel free of cost on a shuttle to and from campus, running at regular intervals throughout the week. This reduces use of personal vehicles and fossil fuel.
Subsidised Metro Access
Staff, faculty and students get highly subsidised transport to the nearest metro station, which encourages the use of public transport.
Electric Vehicles and Charging
The university has more than 40 electric vehicles, including 20 electric golf carts serving about 9,000 students daily and 30 electric bikes, and 15 EV charging points. Eco-friendly, battery-operated golf carts are the only vehicles allowed to move people inside the campus, and wheelchair-accessible electric carts make the transport available to people with disabilities. 48% of the on-campus vehicle operators are women.
No Personal Vehicles on Campus
Personal vehicles are strictly prohibited on campus. This keeps the campus walkable, safe and free of vehicle exhaust, for a community of more than 20,000 people.
Measuring Progress
Emissions from employee commuting are included in JGU's Scope 3 accounting and reporting, and are tracked towards the university's net zero target for 2035.
Remote and Flexible Working
Flexible work arrangements for academic and administrative staff reduce the number of journeys, as set out in the Flexible Work Policy.
